For this block, with relatively narrow streets, densifying by almost 40 per cent is quite a gain. Adding a programme of flats and family homes in the city, with an elevated collective outdoor route and greening the neighbourhood is a huge win for this area of Amsterdam.
Title Hidden behind the railway viaduct and with hardly any through traffic, this is one of the oases in the centre of Amsterdam. Shops, public transport and water are nearby and the neighbourhood has several (publicly accessible) courtyards with greenery and playgrounds. The largely car-free streets and car-free quays along the water are suitable for walking and playing. The benches and taking possession of the street with private plants and greenery, gives too involvement and the relative calm of this part of the centre its character.
The Intervention, Gains and chances An urban route, past houses and parks, with surprising vistas and both communal and private outdoor spaces, connect the new maisonettes and flats. A new place for all residents, where children can play nicely and safely outside.
Adding maisonettes on a communal public route at height, bordered by greenery, with an entrance via the new lift in the collective courtyard garden and adding starter flats, allows for densification in a quiet place in the centre of Amsterdam. Increasing housing diversity will make this neighbourhood more future-proof. Green roofs and the new route through and across the building, with streets and squares at height add value for all residents of this place.
